Luderitz, Namibia

Fort Dauphin, Madagascar

Maputo, Mozambique

MSC Excursions - Luderitz, Namibia

LUD01 - Ghost Town 2 ½ hours) - 2013/2014

A visit to the ghost town of Kolmanskop, once the focal point of a glittering diamond rush, is an excursion not to be missed. Former stately homes, their grandeur now scoured and demolished by the wind, bear witness to one of the most vivid periods in Namibian history.

Diamonds were discovered in April 1908, which sent hordes of fortune hunters streaming to the diamond fields. When mining operations ceased, Kolmanskop became a ghost town, the splendid old houses gradually falling prey to the encroaching sand dunes.

A wealth of interesting facts and artefacts can be found in the old schoolroom, not a museum and here you will find a clear picture of what used to be a once-booming diamond town!

LUD03 - Luderitz On Foot - 2 hours - 2013/2014

Built on rocks in a small enclave within the Sperrgebiet (restricted Diamond Area) is the quaint harbor town of Lüderitz with its curious array of historical German-style buildings built during the diamond rush.

Set around the sparkling bay, with their gables, winding stairwells, verandas, turrets and bay and bow windows, these buildings have a unique character of their own.

The most striking is Goerke-House, a former magistrate’s residence built in 1909. The Lutheran Church on the hill above the bay, known as the Felsenkirche, was built in 1912. Kaiser Wilhelm II, the German emperor at the time, donated its stained glass windows.

Lüderitz was the first German settlement in the former Deutsch-Südwest-Afrika. It was named after a Bremen merchant Adolf Lüderitz, who began trading operations in the harbour.

Your guide will take you around the reserve along good hiking trails that wind through vegetation typical of the east and south of Madagascar. You will be able to admire exotic plants such as young Baobab trees, lemon eucalyptus, and oil palm.

Your visit is ideal for lemur spotting as every lemur species native to the south of Madagascar lives in this park; but lemurs are not the only animals you will admire, the others being chameleons, tortoises, crocodiles and some birds. The excursion will also include a local entertainment performed by the villagers.

PISL18 - Dolphin Watching - approximately 2 hours - 2013/2014

Mozambique has got to be one of the most incredible destinations in the world for watching marine mammals. What most people are interested in when they think of dolphins is the way that they “talk.” Dolphins identify themselves with a unique signature whistle which is essentially like their own thumbprint. The sounds can be produced by the movements of the air in the trachea and nasal sacs. The sounds are a variety of clicks, moans, grunts, squeaks and so on. Some of their sounds even resemble creaking doors, not to mention whistling. The sounds can vary in volume, pattern and frequency and they are used to call their calf, alert other dolphins or simply to show that they are having fun.

Dolphins are amazing in every way. From the way they “surf” next to a bow of a boat, or jump almost 20 feet in the air. What you may not realize is that there are always reasons for what they do. Although it looks like they are just having fun, it actually ingrained in them to follow these certain behaviors. For example, when you see them swimming next to a boat, it is because they are hitching a ride so to speak. The currents that are pushed forward by the boat help them to retain some of their energy because they just go along with the currents. What is most fascinating is the way that they interact with fellow mammals, humans and one another. Although we may never totally grasp the dolphin’s nature or personality, at least we can sit back, watch and enjoy it. Please note: sightings of dolphins cannot be guaranteed even though it is dolphin season. Drinks can be purchased for cash on board.
